Description

“Gothic” is a much maligned musical genre. No matter how cool “Goths” think they are, the truth
is that, they, and their music is roundly ridiculed. So much so that an obvious modern day Goth band such as The Horrors
is described by the music press as being “Dickensian gutter punk” rather than use the much more tidy term of
Gothic.



This is a mix from my music collection dating from 1982 to 87, and, yes, I was a Goth. How did this happen? Well, I had
always worn black since I had the choice ,I loved pounding rock music so when a friend put on a Sisters Of Mercy
12” single that was it, yet another 16 year old with back-combed hair and eyeliner was spawned, (even if was
mainly for the looks of shock we would get from the patrons of our local pubs in the Kent countryside)



Many of these bands such as The Birthday Party and Joy Division would never term themselves “Gothic” and
rightly so, but they did lay the foundations for many of the bands who came later and who cannot deny the Goth tag,
bands such as Sisters of Mercy, Skeletal Family and the Fields of the Nephilim were Goths no matter how much they
protest.

Other bands on this collection just got swept under the general label, Dead Can Dance were definatly not Goths, but at a
4AD event I attended in Camden the crowd certainly was. Specimen were more Glam than Goth, Alien Sex Fiend were rubbish
and god only knows what The Band of Holy Joy would call themselves and he’s not telling. One band in this bunch
“The Plumed Serpent” have no history whatsoever, I bought the album as a C60 cassette off the counter of my
local record shop (Richards Records in Ashford, Kent) for a pound. I never heard of them before or after, I quite like
them.



Many of these songs are among my favourites and some are not, most are converted from vinyl so have some skips and
juddering from conversion.



Time for a Goth revival? maybe not, but I still love a lot of this stuff.
